The genus Ixora contains around 500 species which is a low tree or a shrub and prefers acidic soil.
It is distributed among sub-tropical and tropical areas, however tropical Asia has a great diversity of its species.
Ixora also can grow at tropical areas in the states such as Florida and is commonly known as West Indian Jasmine.
A few dozen flowers bloom in a cluster to from a corymb.
The red flowers are used for Hindu worship. The genus name originated in Shiva
who is one pillar of the three highest Hindu gods.
